# About Civic Seedling

Small, honest tools for planning a vegetable garden, a raised bed or a community plot.

## What it is

Civic Seedling has five free tools: a [planting calendar](https://civicseedling.sbs/) worked out from your frost dates, a [square-foot garden planner](https://civicseedling.sbs/square-foot-garden-planner/), a [seed spacing calculator](https://civicseedling.sbs/seed-spacing-calculator/), a [companion planting chart](https://civicseedling.sbs/companion-planting-chart/) that says how good the evidence is, and a [seed starting countdown](https://civicseedling.sbs/seed-starting-countdown/). They are meant for home gardeners, allotment holders and the people who run shared and school gardens.

## Where the numbers come from

Every timing and spacing comes from published university extension guides: University of New Hampshire, Montana State, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Colorado State, Minnesota, Utah State and Washington State. Each page lists its sources. These are regional averages, so treat the dates as a starting point and adjust for your garden and the varieties you grow.

## How it works

Every tool runs in your browser. Your frost dates, bed plans and choices are saved in your browser's local storage so they are there next time, and nothing you type is sent to a server. Once a page has loaded it keeps working offline.

## What it is not

Civic Seedling is not linked to any university, seed company or garden organisation. It does not look up your frost dates for you: you enter the averages for your area from your weather service or a local extension office.
